Looking for advice on temporary sealant
« on: July 26, 2012, 02:27:30 PM »
I started disassembling and cleaning my new 175 project yesterday.  So far, the only unrepairable rust I've found is on the seat-frame, but there are some areas on the exhaust and fual-tank that have some bad pitting.  I know that it will be a long time (possibly a couple of years)  before I can afford to have everything re-plated and painted, so I need a way to protect the vulnerable metal between now and then.  It will either be in a garage or covered outside, but this area is known for relatively high-humidity, and I don't want to have to remove all the rust again.  Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on what I could use?

I've been considering using Plasti-dip, but I don't have any experience with it, and I don't know if it will have any long-term effects.  For those that haven't heard of it, it's basically a spray-on vinyl that can be peeled off when you want to get rid of it.  I've also been thinking about some sort of oil, like what's used to protect brake-rotors and such while they sit on the shelf waiting to be sold, but I have no idea where to find a product like that, or what it would be called.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!
