New condensers. Any tips on soldering them in?
« on: June 07, 2015, 09:30:56 PM »
I bought a set of condensers for my 175. The boxes are marked L and R. I dont see any difference in them other than the direction the little brass tangs are pointed. the book shows two different part numbers, but it looks like the felt holder is a separate piece, so i dont really know what the difference would be. I am assuming I just unsolder the two wires from each old condenser, twist the wires back together and solder to the two brass terminals on the new ones. Sound about right?
Any tips on installing these would be appreciated.

Yeah. So anyway, it was pretty much just solder them on. It seems to have fixed the running issue - plugs fouling, no spark, etc.
I actually had it up to about 60mph today and it ran ran pretty good. It is a bear to start, i think maybe i need to re-look at the timing now that i have replaced the condensers. I had it all over the board when i was trying to troubleshoot it. I may just have to figure out what the starting routine needs to be. Seems to fire off with full choke and full throttle after about 500 kicks. It sounds to have a good bit of piston slap and the compression is around 90 both sides. Seem a little low? I also have lots of 2 stroke oil leaking from the pump area and tranny oil leaks as well. At least it runs and is no longer back firing and fouling plugs and burning points!! Now i have the motivation to fix some of the other stuff.....

Keep going Randy. It'll get there. Although, 500 kicks sounds like about 497 or 498 too many, a runner is a happy thing. ;D
If this were a 350, 90 psi would be at the low limit for compression, so that could certainly be a contributor to the sluggish starts.

Thanks. i definitely need to get this sorted (or mount a starter motor to it) - the bottom of my foot is pretty sore. I guess maybe i'll have to pop the jugs off this thing and take a look at the rings/bore.
Lesson= flip the footpeg up and wear work boots when kick starting the hell out of it  ;)
