Title: 175HS Oil Tank Sight Window Question
Post by: Steve S. on August 07, 2011, 07:12:04 PM
Can this window be replaced?  Mine is leaking.  I did check the Parts Manual, but wasn't sure if the sight was available seperately.  If it is, does it just get epoxied in, or is there some other method to attach to tank?
Thanks!

Steve

Me again,

Sounds like were in the same phase of a restoration.  I cleaned my oil tank yesterday and noticed the sight glass was loose.  After I flushed and cleaned the inside of the tank I cleaned up the area where the sight glass sits and put a small bead of 3M yellow ultra high strength weather stripping/gasket sealer around the recessed area where the sight glass goes. Then slid the glass in.  I've used this 3M stuff a bunch on my 1970 land rover, mostly trim type applications but it holds very well. It does say "gasket sealer" on the tube so I figured it will be ok with oil and the tank is not under pressure so it seems like a pretty safe bet.  I'll keep you posted.  I have a feeling any silicone type sealer would work, may be someone will chime in with something that has been tested.  Worst case if you try something that fails you will see the leak and its easy to get to if you have to make a repair.

Thanks again NC_Mule.  So are you saying the sight glass is available??  Mine is actually cracked, so I will need a new one.
Thanks.

Whoops, I assumed yours was leaking around the sightglass like mine was, not that yours was cracked.
Part number for the sight glass is 5531-5010.  Shoot Richard an email and see what he has.
As I said before I'm new to these bikes and I have found that the parts catalogue has been very helpfull sorting out what I'm missing and how things are assembled. The one I'm using covers the 175 HS, I have it in PDF form I'll be glad to email it to you.  Shoot me a PM with your email if you want it.

O.K. Thanks again.  I wasn't sure if that part number was the actual sight or some sort of rubber cover.  I have emailed Richard with a list of parts but haven't heard back from him yet.  I really need to get some parts in my hands so I can get this thing up and running!  Thanks for the offer of the PDF Parts Manual.  I'll private message you for it.

You should not have a problem getting a new window if needed.  If you do a "search" on this forum, I believe you will find some past discussion on replacing the window.  It is all one piece.  Different people used different sealants.  All worked as I remember.
