GTO Diffuser/Stinger/Baffle Nut
« on: October 07, 2013, 11:06:06 AM »
I picked up some NOS parts recently and included in the bunch were 2 different packs of diffuser nuts with the same 350 GTO part number...6321-9010.

The problem is the nuts are different lengths and I'm not sure which is correct. Either one of the packs is mislabeled and is for a different bike or maybe there was an early and later version of these and both are "correct" for a GTO.

I've included a pic and you can see the shorter nut is approx. 9/16", while the longer one is 1".

So fellow GTO owners, what say you?

I'll check when I'm home tonight, but from memory, this is the nut that sits in the cut out of the connector rubber isn't it? If so, I know that it only protrudes a very small amount from the rubber. Will let you know for sure a bit later.

Thanks for the quick response Steve.

I'm a little surprised though, I thought it was going to be the longer one.  Does anybody recognize the longer nut on their bike? BTW, these aren't threaded completely through like cylinder head nuts.

They also require a 9mm spanner which is not exactly a common size!

Hi,

I believe they are also both correct. However, the longer one, blind tapped hole, is the early ones, as I found them on a set of NOS 175 high pipes. For some reason they must have changed them at some point ?

The longer one is also easier to deal with !

Well so far based on the responses to date, it appears the 70 Gold GTO's had the shorter nut and the 71 White bikes had the longer nut.

Ray, are the thread size/pitch the same for the 175 & 350's? The parts manuals for these bikes show a different # for the nut...... same prefix of 6321, but 8000 & 9010 respectively for the last numbers.

Hi Ya,

I went a double checked and yes the thread size is the same as the nut fits both.

later .. ray

Thanks Ray, but somethings still not "jiggy" with all this.  ;D

There are lots of parts with the 8000 suffix # used on the 350's, so if this is just the same long diffuser nut from the 175's being used on the GTO's, why would Bridgestone feel a need to change the suffix # to 9010?

I guess it could be that the pack of long nuts I got were mislabeled and it should have been 6321-8000.

But...... if the 71 White GTO's had the longer nut, as Gene's response suggests, why is the part # in the manual 9010 and not 8000?  ???  ;D

Arrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh!

I have a '71 white tank GTO and it has the short nuts.  They use a 9mm socket.  If it had the longer ones, it wouldn't look right.  The short ones fit in the recess perfectly, but are easily accessible.

Well.... as much as I like a good mystery, it looks like I'll have to settle for a mislabeled package as the answer to my question.  8)
