M5 Screws
« on: May 07, 2011, 06:49:11 PM »
Has anyone replaced the 5mm machine screws on their 350 with hex or socket head screws?  If so where did you find the replacements?

Some of the phillips head screws, especially those that hold the carburetor covers on are much the worse for the wear and impact driver use.  Reed sent me some replacement 6mm phillips screws that looked better.  Then after looking at some 350 pictures, and on the advice of a local I thought that I would replace the phillips head with Socket Head Cap Screws (SCHS).  The local Fastenal store had a good assortment of M6 SCHS.  They really look and more importantly work great.

However the rear of the RHS carburetor cover and the air cleaner are held on with M5 (5mm) screws with a .9 pitch.  The M5 Fasstenal screws have a different, course, pitch thread than the screws in the bike.  According to the local retired machinist down the street newer M5 screws are marked on the head and as near as I could find in his machinist manual the standard (ISO???) for M5 screws is a .8 pitch.  The M5 screws that we found in his bucket of screws with the mark on top definitely had a different, 0.8, pitch, than the M5 screws off of my bike.

Thanks

regards charlie

Hi Charlie,
I have used stainless socket heads on some of my Bridgestone 350's in the past. I bought some a few years ago from a vendor on e-bay. I don't recall who it was but I have seen them listed recently. Take a look thru recent Bridgestone listings and just do a search. I think you will find them. He sold the fasteners as a set for 350 Bridgestones and they cover everything I believe. If you don't find them let me know and I will try to figure out who I got them from. Good luck.
Later Mike

Found them on EBay and ordered a set.  Will post how it works out.

Like Mike, I had seen these before but I couldn't get back to them.  I had to broaden my usual BS parts search to find them.  I wish that there was a way to eliminate the BS tires and tubes on the search.

Thanks again

regards charlie

In the search window, place the following.............(without the brackets of course)

(bridgestone motorcycle -tire -tube -tubes)

Enter the item you're searching for followed by a (space), then a minus symbol and the item you don't want immediately next to it and if you want any others items gone...follow the same course.  (space)-item(space)-item etc. etc.

Have fun  ;D

Here's a search done that way..........

Thanks Moonpup:  Great tip on searching it cut down a bunch of time on my daily look at available parts.  I see that the -stuff works in the eBay search window too.  Thanks again for the hot tip.

www.stainlesscycle.com is a great vendor.

(At least on my 70 GTO) the rear two screws on the right hand side carb/clutch cover, and the screws that hold the air cleaner are M5 with a different pitch.  The service man at StainlessCycle confirmed that the originals were a .9 pitch made to a JSO, Japanse, standard that existed until about 1970.  Anyhow he cut and sent me the hex-head screws at no extra charge.

Now I need to remember to put a hex-head driver in my tool kit.

Took awhile.

I believe the use of the 5 x .9 screw size was very common among the Japanese manufacturers in the vintage era.
I cleaned the baffles on my RD 125 last year and the muffler baffles were held in place by 5mm x .9 screws.
Another example: I just received two NOS Suzuki T200 baffles for the mufflers I am working on now to send off to Iceland when I get them cleaned up.
These baffles also are secured by 5mm x .9 screws.
It's like it was a industry standard at that time.
As I recall, I was able to find replacements for the RD 125 in the metric bolt and nut section at my local hardware store in a town of about 6400 people.
I don't remember it being a problem at all to find some.

I was just at my local Westlake/ACE hardware store and they didn't have and M5 x .9 screws at all and they have a huge selection of metric fasteners.

I also just looked online at a few cyber nut and bolt vendors and none of them list them.

I wonder if Richard carries them?

I would hate to have to buy a $30 bolt kit from E Bay just to get 6 screws for the air cleaner.

I'm going to order some stuff from Richard and I'll try to get those screws from him.
I have a tilt wheel for more headroom!

As this is an old post I didn't know about the 5mm screws with a .9mm pitch thread until I tried to replace them with new and a .8mm pitch, baffled I searched this post and got a result. Thanks for posting. :)

Had to dig out the old screws as I'd thrown them, clean them up and reuse them, no problem but good to know.

The screws that StainlessCycle recut for me with the proper pitch worked like a champ.  If you do not mind the price he was a good vender for me.
