Rechroming wheels - how bad is too bad?
« on: December 06, 2012, 10:44:41 PM »
Sorry for the elementary post, but I'm new to the chrome wheel thing.  (My other classic bike has aluminum wheels.)

How bad do they have to be (rust-wise) to be non-salvageable, in your opinion?  The rear wheel on my BS is very scaley, and there is a one-inch chunk of aluminum missing from the brake opening lip on the hub.  Would I be advised to just keep an eye out for an Ebay replacement?

A picture is attached showing the general condition, as well as the brake shoes that were (of course) delaminated from the drum brake.  The missing chunk of aluminum on the hub lip is barely visible between the hub and the drum brake.

"Would I be advised to just keep an eye out for an Ebay replacement?"

That would be a yes, but I would first check with Richard to see what he has and what his prices are before tossing money out on eBay for something you're probably going to have to rechrome any way.

BTW, here's what's on eBay at the moment......

Thanks Moonpup,
I appreciate the feedback, and you taking the time to post the Ebay link for me.
