Selenium Rectifier Questions - 175
« on: November 08, 2011, 10:08:28 AM »
In regards to the post below, I tried the test from the service letters on both the rectifier in the bike and a spare that I have from a parts bike.  Both rectifiers passed the test.  I did find that the short red wire that bridges across the top of the rectifier in the bike had broken loose from one of the posts, so that may be the problem.  I may have to unsolder and replace it as I think it is too short to just solder back in place.  This isn't a stranded copper wire, but I think a solid copper wire covered in red insulation.  I'll have to find some similar wire and try to fix it over the weekend.  (Would I have to make sure to use the same type of wire or would any solid copper wire work?)

One odd thing that I noticed is that the rectifier on the bike is larger than the one from the parts bike.  The rectifier on the bike (later serial number) is approximately 2" X 2" X 1.5" and has Ps25c23/1 painted on it.  The rectifier from the parts bike (early serial number) is approximately 1.5" X 1.5" X 1.5" and has PH16c23/1 painted on it.

The rectifiers look the same otherwise....same posts and same blue color.  I'd like to fix the one on the bike and use it even though both test ok because the one from the parts bike is much crustier looking.  Anyone know if these are both for a 175 Dual Twin, or might one of them have been scavenged from another model Bridgestone?

Thanks guys!

Paul

175 Dual Twin Charging Problem?

Thought I'd throw out a weird issue I'm having and see what the experienced folks may have to offer.

My 175 has what I think is a charging problem.  It is one of the earlier models that has the charge control switch below the ignition switch.....the switch is supposed to be pulled out when traveling below 35 mph and pushed in when traveling above 35 mph.

I've got a brand new, fully charged battery in it.

When the switch is pulled out, it runs great and revs smoothly when opening the throttle.

When the switch is pushed in, it seems to bog down and starts chugging when opening the throttle.

The manual I have for the 175 DT mentions the following as potential culprits:
- selenium rectifier
- generator
- key switch
- charge control switch

Any ideas to approaching this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Paul

Any kind of copper wire will work, it just needs the connection. If you want to use solid copper, a good place to get a piece is from household wiring if you have some extra lying around as most homeowners do.

I haven't noted a difference in size of the rectifiers, maybe others on here have.  The 175/200/350 charging systems are the same basic design, although the 350 does have more capacity, but the 350 rectifier is the same part number as the others.

Sounds good, thanks Karl!

I've found some 14 gauge house wiring and also some 18 gauge solid core wiring for the outside undergound dog fence.  I'll give one of them a try over the weekend and see if it makes a difference, thanks again!
