Leaky Cylinder Base Gasket
« on: January 27, 2010, 05:06:06 PM »
I bought a nice 1967 90 Sport and it has a leaky base gasket (oil). The previous owner is and avid BS guy and had replace the head gasket. I though it was funny he didn't fix the base gasket too, maybe it wasn't leaking until after he replace the head gasket. Anyway, is the any reason a simple base gasket replacement wouldn't fix this. Looking to order the parts tomorrow.

Thanks!

You will know for sure, once you get the cylinder off. As is usually make sure the mating surfaces are clean and don't do anything to mark up these surfaces by trying to pry off the cylinder. Maybe a little sealer with the NEW gasket to help make sure it seals. I would suggest something like Yamahabond since it is silver/gray in color and it makes it unnoticeable. Just be real careful getting the cylinder free and off the engine. Many people get excited and use force getting it off and make a real expensive mess of it all.

Dave is more than correct, you must install new gaskets, make sure the gaskets are good, not hard as many are now getting brittle with age. Luke

Thanks! I ordered them the other day. From dealing with old Guzzi gaskets I found sparying them with a little water makes them grow back to "as built" size and easier to fit.

Hey Guys,
Have you ever thought of making your own gaskets (base gaskets)? You can get good good quality gasket paper from an automotive store, and can buy a gasket punch kit on the web for a reasonable price. I make all of mine. They work well for me.
