TMX 100 frame modification
« on: October 20, 2013, 03:01:34 AM »
Here's a frame modification I made to my TMX 100.

I noticed that the swing fork bolt can bend and the area where it attaches to the frame seems to be a bit of a weak point. I had two plates welded either side of the frame and a longer bolt made from stainless steel.

It did the trick of stiffening up that area and is hardly noticeable.

Hello Stu,  very nice job,   my name is Mark, I am a new member . I have been working on a tmx 100, I'm not sure what year it is, but I'm looking for a tank petcock for it . Also looking for some handle bar perches. I have a new throttle cable for it , but not sure how to install it into the twist grip at handle bar, it has to feed through the short tube to the twist grip.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

   Thanks
  Mark

Hi. Mark,

It sounds from your post as if you have a late model TMX, where the throttle cable emerges from the bottom of the handlebar switch case, with a right-angled chrome tube guide. Am I correct? The correct cable for that model should come with the guide tube already installed on the cable. Early model TMXs (and all BS100GP models) had the same scroll-type throttle as the smaller Bridgestone singles, and the gthrottle cable goes therough the centre of the handlebars and emerges horizontally a few inches along the bar. That cable for that model comes without the chrome guide tube (it doesn't need it), but the two cables are not interchangeable.

There was also a change of handlebar diameter that went with the change of throttle arrangement, early TMXs had 19mm bars, late ones had 22mm bars. The bar diameter affects all the handlebar switchgear and lever perches, as well as the top yoke and handlebar clamps. Late model TMX switchgear and lever assemblies are the same as that used on the 175 and 350 Bridgestones. Early TMX  switchgear and levers are unique to the GP and TMX.

Hope that helps.

Graham, yes that is what it is , it must be a late model, I checked diameter of bars and they are 22mm. So I willtry to find a cable with the tube attached at the end that screws into the twist grip.
  I appreciate your help.

Hello Graham,

I never realised that there was a TMX throttle cable with the guide tube already attached. Is there a part number for this?

I actually made my own, by using an early model cable, installing the guide tube from a 175, had a new inner cable made extending it to siuit so it fits correctly. It works great.

Hi, "mb",

From memory, I think I picked the part number from a Dealer Service Letter that covered the change to 22mm handlebars, and I know Richard had them in stock back in 1999.

Unfiortunately I don't have my Service Letter file to hand at the moment (I'll have to dig it out and get back to you), but I do remember it was late number Service Letter, in the BSG-007* range.

Watch this space,

Graham

OK, I've found my Service Letter file. Service Letter BSG-0077 deals with the change to 22mm bars on the TMX. The throttle cable to go with the larger bars is part number 6176-5610.

The new handlebar switchgear and levers are the same as used on the BS200 and BS350GTR.

Hope that helps - try Richard to see if he still has the throttle cable in stock.
