BS Mechanic:
What color was the original sealant used between the upper and lower crankcase halves?  My memory, and bits of remaining sealant says it was silver colored.

Today, what's the best choice for sealing the crankcase halves?  Can you still get "Pliobond", and if so, where?

I use Yamabond 4 gasket sealant on all my engine rebuild ideal for crankcases  with out any gaskets.
And its in sliver the cost about 17.95 per tube from your Yamaha dealer.

Nissan uses some stuff called "Three Bond" which curiously is exactly the same as Yamabond 4. It is some good stuff, easy to work with and is almost indestructible. I'll bet they are made by the same company. Try to stay away from the Harry Homeowner silicone adhesive, I've seen that fail under heat, pressure and oil. Yamabond won't.

I've seen Pliobond regularly in ACE Hardware stores. It is good stuff. The original sealer was silver IIRC, and we generally used Yamabond for everything in the old days.  My basket case 350 went back back together with red RTV in 1974 (noticed a couple days ago when I was checking the timing that there is still a bit of red RTV peeking out between the crankcases 39 years & 40,000 miles later).
