Reed, I would reccommend the Panasonic Lumix FZ40K. I currently have a Lumix FZ1 that I got when these first came out about 5-6 years ago and it' been great.

Mine has a 12X Optical zoom vs digital zoom which makes all the difference when needing closeup from quite a far distance. The newer FZ40K has twice the zoom and wide angle that mine doesn't have. You also can't beat the quality of the "Leica Lens"

The new one also has many more mega pixels than mine which is also another benefit. The price is about the same as what I paid back then.

Here's a link to Panasonics site to check it out, then you could search the net for maybe better prices.

I've had a Sony Cybershot with a Carl Zeiss lense for a few years. It's a 5.1 Mega pixel with a 3X optical zoom and more zoom digitally. It is an awesome camera and will take movies too. They probably don't make the 5.1 anymore, it's probably much higher. It's easy to load it onto my computer, and it uses a SD memory stick that many times you can pop right into a slot on your IMac or PC and load pictures. You can also use a USB cable.

The Sprint EVO phone I just bought has a 8 mega pixel camera in it with a zoom and you can email the pics or movies from the phone to any email address you want to. I just used that feature yesterday when I had to send some pics of a blown up Nissan motor to the warranty claims center and the pictures came out very sharp. I had pulled the oil pan and took a pic of the metal laying in the bottom of it. You could plainly see that the motor was a sludge motor and the claims guy immediately asked for oil change receipts. You gotta change the oil more than once in 50,000 miles, don't cha know  :o

The price on these cameras has come way down and I've seen 5 to 8 mega pixel cameras for around $100. Don't get anything less than a 5. Make sure it takes movies with sound. Most come with software to load onto your computer so you can load them up and play with them and print copies. You can even get Photoshop software and insert your GTR into the winning position at a Isle of Man GP race. I would believe it.... :D

I forgot to add, Moonpup's camera is a lot more of a professional unit than I'm talking about, and the price reflects that. I'm just a hobbyist kind of guy and just use them mainly to post pictures on forums or send goofy pics to my buddies. If you are going to use it for artsy photography or even professional photography you probably would want something more than a $100 camera, even though they do a surprisingly good job.

Look at this... I'm just a little out of date  ;D :

I use a compact point & shoot, a Sony DSC-W290, 12.1 Megapixel, 5X zoom, HD (720) movies.  It's small enough to drop in my shirt pocket.  Pretty happy with it, although I'd like even more zoom. Taking shots of bikes on the track takes a pretty good zoom, since normally you can't get very close.  The high megapixel counts on most newer cameras is nice now and then, particularly if you want to crop photos, although for normal family events and other close shots, it's overkill and just takes up more space on your computer and backups.  I usually shoot at 8 megapixels; there's plenty of resolution even if I want to crop significantly.  In fact, for normal 4x6 prints (if you ever print photos), 3.2 megapixels is enough for a sharp print.

Check out some of the sites that have user reviews (amazon and some others) before you buy.  You have to take some of those with a grain of salt, mostly it's the people who have problems that post, those that don't have problems don't bother.  However, sometimes there's a common theme that points out a problem, some feature that people thought they were getting, but doesn't work right, some good feature that you didn't realize you wanted, etc.

I use a Nikon Coolpix P100

Its main feature, it it looks and feels like a real 35mm camera, it features a 26X zoom,10.3 meg and full HD Movies.
Pretty simple to use, ever for me, and that's saying something

I bought it locally as I feel the support they give with free HOW-TO-USE classes is well worth a bit extra.

A good candidate for the Cherry 2000 (when she comes out).  Sorry for the reference to those few who may consider it a classic movie!
