175 Cylinder Question
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:20:03 AM »
Hi all,

I’ve removed the heads and cylinders from my 175 Dual Twin.  Both heads and the left cylinder were fine.  The right cylinder had a small scratch down the inside.

I know that these cylinders are chrome lined, so I’m not sure what the options are.  I wouldn’t think so, but can these be honed to smooth the scratch?  Are the only other options replating the inside of the cylinder or trying to find a new/used one?  It’s not a very deep scratch, but enough that I can see it and can feel it with my finger.

Thanks!

Sorry no one has answered -

If it was mine and the scratch is really pretty small, I'd try just running it as is.  If it's on the exhaust side, it may be a little riskier than if it's on the sides or back as far as causing a seizure under really hard running.  You can put it together and run a compression check to see if the compression is significantly affected.  The chrome is very thin and normally isn't honed, although I have before to get aluminum smear off one that has seized or to give a quicker break-in to a new set of rings.  Just don't go very far (probably about .001 - .0015) as that will also be increasing your piston clearance.

Cylinders can be rechromed or Nikasiled.  It will probably cost around $175-$200/ cylinder.  You will be able to find a new or used one cheaper.
