Three Cylinder Bridgestones?
« on: December 11, 2010, 01:25:36 PM »
I copied this from the Kawasaki Triples forum, I don't know if any of this is true but it makes for some nice daydreams  ;D......

Bridgestone was on the brink of introducing a 550cc triple, with 3 rotary valves, killer bike. I actually saw 3 prototypes on my way back from VietNam in mid-1971, VERY interesting, and if they had made it, much faster than the CB750 4, and our H1's. All 3 carbs were behind the engine, with outer rotary valves, and the center used a 2 piece valve, installed onto the crank with a set ring, into a groove and inlet passage in the cases, much like Can-Am used on their single engines. They were to be dry clutch, 7 speed engine packages, with electronic ignition mounted UNDER the bottom of the cases. If I weren't out of commission with my hip, I might have been able to con a ride on one of the prototypes, close, but it just didn't happen. I actually heard one run, and saw it go around a race track, NICE indeed, but, still had a DRUM BRAKE pair, cardboard bad no-stop brake shoes, both ends. The thing was VERY FAST, and it sounded great as well. It'd have been a real winner.
I have a tilt wheel for more headroom!

dont know about the Vet's recollections. But there is a slim Bridgestone/Can Am connection. Tony Murphy raced a GTR on the West Coast and I think some AMA races. He and the 50 plus  horse power GTR set an AMA record at Bonneville. I recollect that a fellow named Barker helped with developing Murphy's GTR. Barker later  worked for Can Am.  Also a California frame builder, I think Sonic weld supplied the frame for Murphy's GTR. I think one of Sonic welds top employee's/designers worked on the early Can Am frames. Murphy's GTR is pictured on one of the BS web sites. I think Murphy is selling Rotax parts these days.
