New owner of a '67 BS-175 barn find
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:26:08 AM »
Hello everyone!  My name is Laken, and I just bought my first motorcycle!  Not only have I never had a motorcycle before, I don't even know how to ride one!  Am I fool?  That remains to be seen...

I was with a friend looking at some old cars for sale on a farm in Shelby, IA, USA when an old bike in an old barn caught my eye.  The only thing that the owner knew about it was that it was a Bridgestone, and it had been sitting there for over 30 years - it still has Kansas plates from 1975.  I took a couple of pictures and did some reasearch that night.  I went back and bought it the next day, for $100.  According to the s/n plate it's a 175 DT, but it seems to have some of the Hurricane Scrambler options - the high-pipes (but not the stingers) and the reinforced handlebars, but it doesn't have the skidplate.  It needs a whole lot of work and a few parts are missing, but it's 98% complete.  I'm an automotive mechanic and all-around handyman, so I'm hoping I wont have too much trouble fixing it up.  Since I've never worked on a motorcycle before, it should be a heck of a learning experience for me!

If there are any other Bridegstone owners or enthusiasts in the Omaha, NE area that would be interested in talking, hanging out, or helping, feel free to get in touch!

Congratulations on your find. For $100 you certainly won't lose money on the deal.... there's that much and more in parts alone.  ;D

Wish I could help you with answers to some of your questions, but have patience, others with more knowledge on these models are sure to jump in and help you out.

Welcome to the site.

I would say it's an HS...just missing the stingers and skid plate.  Is there a decal on the battery cover?

With the HS exhaust, bars and seat I'd feel reasonably confident calling it an HS.

Looks to be one of the later versions that didn't have the oil tank up under the gas tank.

Thanks for the comments!

The battery cover is missing, and the oil tank is painted over.  I can still see the outline of the "oil injection" decal under the paint on the oil tank... maybe I'll reveal a clue when I clean the paint off.  I started the disassembly and cleaning yesterday, and I'll be working on the oil and fuel tanks today.

Does the seat have a suede  cover?

No suede on the seat, no, but it didn't have a Bridgestone logo on it either, so I don't know that it was the original seat.
