right gear shift
« on: July 22, 2011, 03:53:06 PM »
g day all i was just wondering has anyone got the right shift on there gtr gto .i don't think i have ever seen one. i have been thinking of changing mine to the right and the brakes to the left as a added oddity .what would be the reason for the interchangeable shift and brakes would it be that some were destined for England or Australia.  or i was thinking it is on the cusp of the big manufactures change from right to left anyway for what ever reason i like the idea.

That is a good question Coxy!

I wonder if you could just flip the shift lever over and install it?

You couldn't do that with the rear brake. You would need the specific brake pedal and probably a different cable. Is there anything listed in the GTR parts manual?
I have a tilt wheel for more headroom!

yes you would need a brake lever and different cable .i cant find anything in the parts manual for it .i think Steve is right i will leave as is .i think it would be to weird to have a right hand change Japanese bike and a left hand change triumph (1975 t140v) cheers.

There is a kit to change it over but its very hard to find!
That reminds me of changing things over when i first came
To the USA i would get in the car the wrong side and no
Steering wheel and to this day i sometimes still do it!
Thanks.
Steve.

i would like to get the kit but it really is unimportant .i was having an argument with a bloke at work about cars in America everyone knows that the steering wheel is on the left but what about the pedals i was saying that the accelerator would still be to the right the break in the middle and the clutch to the left he was saying the other way around that would mean that you would have to do everything with your left foot   which i couldn't wrap my head around that idea.

Apparently my mother in law's car has no brake pedal.

Back to the shifter thing... I wonder if Richard has one of those kits? I don't really want one but I am curious to see if any exist.

Possibly different markets around the world had the bikes set up that way from the factory?

It seems weird that the bike can be modified to do that but seemingly no kits are to be found?

i think that would be right about the marketing for different countries .if you have ever seen a Toyota yarris  the speedo taco etc are in the middle of the dash so basically the steering wheel is bolted on the left or right depending on which country it goes to .no offense to Toyota but it is a crap design

I'm pretty certain Richard doesn't have the parts, at least he didn't several years ago, but he's obtained more parts since then.  The parts are listed in service letter BSG-0064.  For some reason, it's not in the list on this site.  The kit SC1534 comes with a mirror image shift lever, a mirror image brake pedal, a longer cable, and a different left footpeg bracket (to clear the brake lever), a longer bolt, a spacer for the right footpeg??, and a new kickstart lever.  Some of the parts show up on ebay now and then.  I've seen several of the cables, I suspect many people have bought the cables to replace their standard cables and wondered why they were so long.

BS sold the kits as a way for dealers to overcome objections of British/European bike owners when trying to sell them a 350GTR/GTO.  I think they may also have been hoping to get some British bike dealers to sell Bridgestones.  I wonder how many were ever sold?  I've never seen one converted.

I'll try to get the service letter inserted into the list on this site.
