sticking carb throttle valve
« on: August 18, 2011, 09:40:21 PM »
Last year I replaced the philips screws which hold the carb onto the intake tube with socket head screws.
Using the allen wrench the carbs could be held firmly in place. A few weeks ago I checked the right carb to see if it was causing a backfiring issue. After getting it back together it seemed that the throttle valve would stick in the full up position. The backfire problem was a condensor broken free from the bracket. Tonight I looked at the sticking throttle valve issue. While removed from the engine it seemed to slide freely. After re-installation it was binding again. Then I realized that by tightening the mounting bolt a little too much it makes the throttle valve bind - FYI.

over tightening of amal type carbs can lead to a permanent distortion of the throttle body this is the exact symptom you have described but i have never heard of this in a mikini type carb   if it continues to bind  i have a second hand pair of carbs i don't know the condition i can pull them apart and have a look  you can have them for the price of postage if you like.

You can get a new set of carbs at a great price of 135.00 from Richard .
It will run so much better!
Thanks.
Steve.

I'll keep the replacement option in mind, but it seems to be good after loosening the allen head screws about 1/3 of a turn.
Riding home Thursday it did a great job of helping me forget what a lousy day at work it was. Near home it started to sputter for a fraction of a second and I thought "now what?" and then realized the reserve setting would be the first thing to try. That was the only problem, so it looks to be on track for another tank of 40 mpg.

Last night I adjusted the retaining screw on the left carb. Then I also felt that the throttle cable could use a little lube after 30 years, so taking it out for a spin it's now idling a little on the slow side (died twice). I hope to get the 30 year old tires swapped out soon with the new Avons, then drain the transmission fluid and reseal the sight gage. One oil leak at a time.
