I removed the heads from my GTR today.
Even before doing that I expected I would need to have the cylinders replated.
I wasn't expecting to see a gouge above the left cylinder exhaust port.
The engine ran strong up until the moment of impact with the deer last fall.
I realized the engine had continued to run after laying on its side - and I had made the mistake that night of having the carb covers off as I had just adjusted the carb settings. That little laziness is adding to the amount of repairs I have to do before getting it back on the road.
I have uploaded many photos of both cylinders in my gallery, and one of the more interesting pictures to me is the link below. Feel free to add any comments. Overall I thought the combustion chambers and piston tops looked very clean as I've never done any internal engine work on the bike since ownership starting in 1980. The engine has probably had less than 1000 miles on it since the days when lead was removed from gasoline.
Next is to remove the exhaust headers and pull the cylinders themselves so I can see about getting them bored and replated by Millenium.
My dad has looked at the service manual and thinks the crankshaft seals are sealed type and I might be able to just flush the crankcase out to remove road dirt from the left cylinder. I hope to see more once the cylinders are off.
