Re chroming Barrels
« on: April 08, 2011, 07:39:24 PM »
Just wondered if any UK members on here have had barrel rechroming done and if so, where and was it a good job, etc? I've just discovered that one of my barrels are badly scored so I've put an ad in the 'wanted' section, but of course, rechroming is another option.

Thanks,
Steve

I've been looking for 350 cylinders for awhile now, I need a right side one.

You could check out this link:

http://www.usnicom.com/

It will give you an idea on what needs to be done and the cost. I am sure there are other places, maybe someone can supply more links.

That's great, Thanks Tomo. I'd heard of US Chrome but didn't realise they had a UK affiliate. I'll give them a call.

cheers,
Steve

Steve,

A friend of mine over in Somerset has built a replica of Phil Read's 1964 GP 250cc Yamaha  racer using a GTR as basis. The engine is standard GTR with expansion boxes, and he had both barrels replated locally by a firm called Langcourt Ltd in Weston-super-Mare. The bike has been "paraded" in loads of Classic meets over the past 6 years, including laps of Spa Francorchamps, the Isle Of Man, Mallory Park and Castle Coombe. My friend doesn't hang about, so the bike is well thrashed and although it has eaten a couple of pistons and seized a couple of times through overheating, the barrels have survived unmarked. On that basis, I reckon the replated barrels ought to survive for ever in road use.

My friend is 110% happy with the job that Langcourt have done. Quite a few other racing boys use them, and they've even done work for Formula one teams and the Ducati factory. I suspect they're not cheap, but could be worth checking them out.

Hi Graham,
Thanks very much for your reply. I spoke to a couple of companies over here yesterday...Langcourt was one of them. Both companies seemed to say all the right things to give me the confidence to entrust my cylinders with them. However, there is the slight possibility that I may be able to get a new LH cylinder which may not necessitate me having to go down that route...but we'll see.

Thanks again,
Steve
