GTR 350 PAINT WORK
« on: April 05, 2011, 01:16:51 PM »
Now that several members have recently had paint work done on their GTR's, Could someone give me recommendations to who is doing high quality work for a reasonably price. I have a tank that's already chromed just need the red candy sprayed on it along with the side cover and oil tank also. My concerns are hoping to find someone who can get a reasonably smooth transition from the chrome to the red paint on the tank sides. Any recommendations would be appreciated as the prices I have been quoted so far seem to be on the high side.
Thanks
Mike

Mike:  I am picking up my tank and covers tomorrow from the body shop.  The going price in Eastern MT, Miles City and Glendive, was $450.  I thought that was on the high side, so I asked them to mount the 350 GTO badges when they were done. I did not have the tank re-chromed; it was in fair shape, but the paint was very faded.

I will send some picks after I pick them up.

Mike;  I posted 4 photo's of my bike in the gallery (deisher6).  The paint is good and I especially liked the new tires.  Note that the rhs oil tank cover is homemade from diamond plate.  I put a grab rail on to replace the left side handle.  On the real photo I couldn't get the seat, rail, taillight, fender and tire to line up very well.  The bike has been down at least once in its past.  I just noticed that my seat is starting to split under where I sit.  I ran it 16 miles today and it easily hit 75 and was still climbing.  It was pretty chilly just at freezing spitting snow so I held off and brought it back in.

The bike looks great nice job. 450 sounds like a fair price to me, from the pics it looks as they blended the paint into the chrome pretty smooth. Can you give me some contact info on your painter.
Thanks

Mike:
I don't think that there is anything to special about Frank's.  They did a good job matching the original, unfaded gold paint.  They also put on a pretty good baked on finish and provided good straight up service.  Here is the contact info:

Frank's Body Shop & Towing
(406) 234-1206
405 S Haynes Ave
Miles City, MT

If you mention motorcycle painting they will remember me.

Richard, the tires are from Dennis Kirk

Part# 641000: Avon Front Speedmaster Rib 3.25S-19 Blackwall Tire
Part# 642161: Avon Rear SM Mark II 3.50S-19 Blackwall Tire (A great recommendation from this blog!)

Interesting; when I went to the local O'Riely auto parts place to find a sealed rear bearing, the salesman asked what it was for and I told him a BS350.  He said did you get it from so in so?  I guess that so in so has one setting in his garage that hasn't been ridden in over 15 years.  Sort of like 'Vincent in the Barn'. I am ging to have to check it out when it gets warmer.
