175 Dynamo/Generator disassembly question

Hi all,

I'm trying disassemble the genterator for my 175 because the seal around the hole where the wires go in disintegrated and some parts of the seal went into the generator and I can't get them out with tweezers.  I didn't think it would be good for rubber fragments to be left in there, so I wanted to take the generator apart to get them out.

I removed the generator from the engine and then removed the two screws along either side of the generator case.  That's as far as I can get....the thing doesn't seem to want to come apart.  There is no info in the service manual that tells how to take the generator apart and I was wondering if anyone on here has ever done this before.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

The bearings in each end are pressed in and you'll probably need to use a gear puller to take it apart or some strong taps with a  hammer if you don't have a suitable puller (protect the ends of the shaft).  Be careful, the wire bundle goes through the housing then splits into three wires that go to the field coil (part of the center steel portion of the alternator) and two wires that go to the points.  You'll need to unhook the two that go to the points/condensers and feed them back through the hole in the end case as it comes apart and feed the bundle inward from the outside through the external hole to keep from pulling them loose from the field coil.

If it was me, I'd leave the rubber pieces in there and just put silicone around the wires where they enter the housing. There is only the armature rotating inside the field coils, no brushes or other parts to mess up.  It should grind rubber parts into powder with no problem.

Sounds safer to just leave well enough alone.  I have a new rubber seal to put on anyway...just didn't want any of the old rubber bits to cause any problems on the inside....thanks!

I had to disassemble three last year; my 350 alternator corroded inside (field wiring wasn't repairable) and my 175 racer had the bearing behind the points cam get loose in the bore, so I had to rob the end housing off a standard alternator - so I had some experience taking them apart.
