350 gtr\gto crankshaft oil seals
« on: March 23, 2010, 04:47:09 PM »
Camweir new member . I'm rebuilding My bridgestone 350 GTR totally. I've been buying parts off and on and got the manuals and info off the net . that was so cool. This is my tech queastion .
the oil seals on the end of the crankshaft were riveted onto the end of the original crank and the replacement part is stuck on or glued on . somewhere in the manuals it say . (this part no longer used )
So is it no longer used on all cranks or just later ones . this is a shop letter changing the parts use . I believe it disintegrated with time and plugged the autolube oil injection system and stopped the oil from getting to the bearing etc.
anyone with precise info please contact.
Thanks Camshaft

camweir replying to my own letter since I read another memo on same subject.
If end seals are necessary on GTR crankshaft there must be a space age glue which could hold the seals on for years. If the seals slip it's because they were old or new old stock Are there new replica parts with modern adhesives which stick better ?

CAMWEIR
The crankshaft oil seals are held in between the crankcase half.
So i used yamaha bond on crankcase surface and on the edge of the crankshaft oil seals.
Please note use lightly and don't block any oil ways!
You can get Yamaha bond in silver or black from any yamaha motorcycle shop!
Thanks.
Reed.

I think Camweir is talking about the rubber/steel end seals mounted in a recess on the outer crank wheels and held in place with a rolled edge or something like that.  They are meant to capture oil from the oil pump coming in through the outer crank bearings and direct it through the lower rod bearings.  There was an initial problem with those coming loose (just pressed in) and destroying the engine, so they were deleted at one time, then they were re-instated (with the addition of being staked in) due to some problems.  See service letter BSG-0070.

I don't know if they are still available or how to hold them in other than trying to "unroll" the edge of the recess in the crankshaft, drive in the new seals, then re-stake with a punch or something similar.  I guess I'd put some bearing retainer grade Loctite on them if it was mine. I don't know how many 350s are successfully running around without those seals, but I'd guess quite a few are.
