175 Clutch Adjustment Questions

Hi guys,

Trying to get the clutch adjusted on my 175 after engine rebuild.  This is my first major engine rebuild, so I'm new to this.  I'm following the instructions in the Clymer manual but am not having any luck. 

I first turn the cable adjuster to get the 1-1/4" center to center distance between the release arm pivot pin and the spring pin......no problem.  Then, when I turn in the clutch adjusting screw to just touch the clutch throw-out bearing....I have to turn the screw almost all the way in (enough that hardly any of the screw is left showing above the lock nut).    I don't think I should have to turn it in that far.  I think my problem may be one of two things:

1.  I didn't get the clutch put back together correctly.
2.  The clutch adjuster screw I have isn't the correct one.  I got this screw as a replacement from another member of this site......the one originally in my motor was broken.  When I look at the parts catalog, two part numbers are listed for the 175 for the clutch adjustment screw.....2267-8000 and 2267-5000.  The parts catalog doesn't distinguish between the two part numbers.   Don't know if maybe they are different lengths and I got the wrong one?  My screw measures 1.068" (27.13 mm).

The 2267-8000 and 2267-5000 are the same parts , just updated somewhere in the past by BS, fully interchangeable

Perhaps look into the assembly of the clutch itself, check the "Official" 175 Service  Manual in the DOWNLOAD section.

I think you forgot the 6 X 10 dowel (or it fell out when you put the clutch cover on) p/n 09056-105.  It goes in the clutch actuator push screw. It has to be put in from inside the clutch cover (or remove the clutch actuator as an assembly) to be installed.

Thanks for the responses guys.....that clears up the issue with multiple part numbers for the clutch adjuster screw.  I swear I put the 6 X 10 dowl in place when reassembling.....put some grease in the actuator assembly to hold it in......guess it could have fallen out though.  I'll have to wait till the weekend to take it all back apart and check.  If that is in place, I guess that I must have put the clutch back together incorrectly.

Aside from the clutch adjuster screw being turned too far in, the clutch just didn't feel right.  It didn't have a noticable "break" when pulling in the clutch lever......it felt more like a constant tension like pulling in the front brake lever.

Hmmmm! I don't think it would fall out if you put grease on it.  You can check by pulling the clutch actuator assembly, but it sounds like either way, you'll need to pull the clutch side cover.  If it fell out, you should retrieve it; if it didn't, you need to check the clutch assembly.  Ouch!

99% sure something didn't get put back quite right in the clutch assembly(I think I can see the 6 X 10 dowel through the screw hole in the clutch actuator assembly)....will find out for sure over the weekend. 

The Clutch Inspection section on page 23 of the official Bridgestone 175 Technical Handbook shows photos of the inner plates and friction plates being measured for thickness but doesn't give the acceptable measurements, only refers to "Service Standard Manual".  Does anyone know what the acceptable thickness for the plates is?

Also, on the same page it mentions that the outer plate is thicker than the others (3mm).  I might not have gotten the thicker fiber plate in place as the outermost plate when I put it back together.  At the time, I didn't notice that there was a difference.

Think I found the problem....looks like the innermost steel plate was caught on the inner end of the hub, not actually engaged on the hub splines.  Will put it all back together tomorrow and see what I get.

Does anyone know the correct torque for the clutch nut?  I've found that the 6 thrust plate bolts should be 130" lbs (~10' lbs) but no mention of the clutch nut.  Thanks!

I checked my 175 service manual and the only thing it has is a general bolt tightening torque table in the back.  Steve Reed posted the following torque specs last month:

12mm ft-lb 29-33 in-lb 350-400
14mm ft-lb 33-36 in-lb 400-440

18mm ft-lb 42-50 in-lb 500-600
20mm ft-lb 50-60 in-lb 600-700
spark plug 20-22 ft-lb of torque.

Thanks for all the help guys.  The problem was the innermost steel plate was not engaged on the clutch hub.  Got it all apart and back together again......adjusted and works like a charm.  Thanks again!!!
