BS 350 Outer Fork Nuts Removal
« on: October 30, 2019, 10:08:31 AM »
I am looking for any help regarding removal of the outer fork nuts on a
BS 350. I have ordered a heavy-duty strap wrench to help with the removal.

Any advice as to how to remove them without scratching them up?

At this point I have no choice but to remove the ones I have and send them
out for re-chroming.

I tried purchasing a new pair. But Richard no longer has them. I also tried
purchasing a stainless steel set advertised from a person in Norway. That
ended with me turning it over to PayPal after waiting over a month to
receive the parts. PayPal got my money back.

Thank you.

Randy

Randy,

The strap wrench is ideal for removal. I wrap a couple turns of duct tape on them first to protect them a bit AND add to the grip the strap is able to get. Removing the sticky mess from the tape is easy enough.

I have also used pieces of an old inner tube as protector material. Even with a strap wrench, these guys ca be a bear to remove. (very fine threads and lots of engagement plus a long time "aging" can set these pretty tight) Some mild heating may also be required. Good luck...

     Hi Randy,
Who was the guy in Norway that you had the non-delivery problem with ?
I am waiting for a set of BS cables from a guy in Scandinavia, he didn't respond to my question on where he was. If it's the same guy, we need to raise the alarm.

Tor Mathisen was the person I was dealing with.

I will never deal with him again. Thank goodness
PayPal was able to get my money back.

At one time I used heavy aluminum plates to clamp the nuts in a vice to hold them.  Strap wrench is better if it works.

     Randy and Alan,
Thanks guys, YES, the very same person. I have just messaged him giving 48hrs to return my money. Immediate response from him simply saying 'I will return money'. I will believe that when I see the cash in my account.
Watch this space, will post a separate warning about him when I have the cash.         Brian.

If he's so quick to return your money why not just send the parts??

Alan, I don't believe he has the parts or has already sold them for a higher offer !
Despite several delaying tactics by him I have received the bulk of my money back after a few veiled threats. Refunded me in Norwegian Kroner and expected me to cover conversion fee !!   A bird in the hand etc. Still owes me £11 GBP.  Also Paypal are reviewing his refund payment, he has rung some alarm bells with them (refunded as though a payment for goods supplied by me !). Paypal say it is then possible for him to raise a dispute and reclaim money from me !!).
Don't deal with this guy, he is unreliable, is the kindest and safest thing I can say at present.
      Brian.
Randy, Apologies for highjacking your post, you should have the fork collars off by now.  :D.

Aren't all you guys with supplier problem hijacking Randy's thread? Why not move that conversation to a new one?

        Bert,
Fair point but Randy mentioned the issue with guy from Norway in his opening post. Maybe I should have said 'diverting' rather than 'hijacking' the thread.
Anyway, I have now recovered my full money from Tor Mathisen and a few bob extra because of exchange rates and his poor maths. Will discuss with admin before issueing a warning about this guy.

Regarding the outer fork nut question.

I cheated and replaced the complete fork leg since I had one.

It took me less than a half hour and I know it was a lot simpler.
