removing muffler
« on: January 31, 2012, 06:30:46 PM »
so winter is half way gone and I havent taken off the muffler off for re-chroming or any of the other parts I was planning on restoring on my 90. So I need to get going...first step is to remove that exhaust header. Is there a special tool for that or do you just lightly tap with screwdriver and hammer to move the round notchy thing that holds the header on? I dont want to break or damage anything.

Hap,
What i do is warm the engine up first then lightly tap the clamp with a punch if you don't have the c wrench.
don't use to much force.
Thanks.
Steve.

took her for the first drive of the spring, got it all warmed up and just like you said, lightly tapped with a punch and the exhaust flange came right off. It was more of a chore trying to get that nut off from behind the muffler off more than anything, but its all off now. I also removed the front frame brace bar for re-chroming as well. I sent for a quote to Browns Plating for re-chroming. Are there any other options for chroming? Also, how do you re-chrome the shocks and gas tank when they have paint on them? I also need the rubber exhaust fitting that goes over and in between the head pipe and muffler.

I just put my BS100 back together with a piece of 1.25" ID radiator hose in the exhaust... I'll let you know in a couple weeks if it holds up.
