Throttle cable for a TMX
« on: August 27, 2019, 10:26:22 AM »
Hello all,
What I thought would be an easy thing to find has turned into a difficultly.
What would be the best option for a throttle cable replacement? The one I have has the 90 degree fitting that screws into the grip and this is where the trouble is.  All the cables I find do not have this?
Any ideas or leads would be appreciated!
Brandon

Brandon; download a parts and a service manual from the downloads portion of this site, as I did. Then determine the correct part number for your cable and email Richard Clark for price and availability. He'll have it. He is typically a little slow with responses, so be patient. He also sells parts on EBay, so you may be able to contact him through a contact from one of his current auctions. They seem to monitor that.

Sorry... I know this is an old thread, but I was just about to post about the same problem, but with a slight twist...

I DID order the right throttle cable P/N from Richard, according to the parts catalog downloads. But it also does not have the required 90-degree thread-in elbow, just like the original poster was asking about. Even the catalog pictures do not show it.

So I was going to ask how in the world I was supposed to get the old elbow off my old cable (I ended up just snipping the old cable) and get it on the new cable, because it looks impossible. The cable ferrule is too big to slide through the elbow.

I first tried by pulling the black plastic Y-connector cover apart and unclipping the two lower cables from the white nylon connector inside, thinking that maybe I could then disconnect the upper cable from it and pull it out of the sheath... but no go. The upper cable won't unclip from the white nylon connector because the ferrule was crimped on after passing through the connector's center hole.

I guess I'll have to cut the ferrule off, but the elbow on, and crimp a new ferrule on. Doesn't sound like a reliable workaround, but I've had some of these new parts from Richard laying around for 10 years (life happens) and if this one was a mismarked part number, I'm probably just out of luck exchanging it.

Am I missing something?

Okay, problem solved (at least close).

I found an old post from the late disc_valve (Graham Weeks), where he said that the later model 100 TMXs like mine changed to a 22mm handlebar. It's noted in a Rockford Motors service bulletin.
With that change, the controls/cables changed to the part numbers on the 350 having the same bars.
Therefore the throttle cable part number for the late-model TMXs with the 22mm handlebars is 6176-5610 (not the 6176-5081 listed in the parts catalog).

The 6176-5610 throttle cable comes with the 90-degree fitting that threads into the throttle control, as the OP was requesting.

Now I just hope Richard still has one. If so, I'll put my (incorrect) 6176-5081 up for sale.
