Choke Cable Removal DT 175
« on: March 07, 2014, 08:06:25 PM »
I need to replace  the choke cables on my 175.

They are pretty chewed up.  Couple questions:

1.  These are tied in to a 'splitter' for a cable for each carb.  Can those be replaced?

2.  I have gotten the carb off but I don't know how to remove the cable from the carb?

(can't seem to get a pic posted.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Timsweet,
The choke plunger is stuck in the carb housing.
Spray some wd-40 into the housing where the
Plunger is and leave it over night and see if it
Will free it self the next day.
Thanks.
Steve.

So after unscrewing the nut and I should be able to just pull on the cable and it should pull out?

Am I understanding that correctly?

so the plunger is at the end of the cable?

Thanks

Thing I did was let it sit overnight like reed said but of it was still stuck I used a small screw driver and I mean small so not too much force. I bent the cable off to the side slightly and put the screwdriver into the slot where the cable would move in the plunger. You'll need a second hand to hold the carb and the return spring if its still strong and in one price. Just lightly give the plunger a twist and have the second person pull slightly. If the Wd did its job it should be very easy to pop it out.

Don't forget to clean the sleeve out real well after you get it out so it won't get stuck again.

Well, unfortunately the right side plunger remains in the carb but the cable came free - actually the end came off.  The plunger appears to be mashed inside.

I'm re-soaking the other carb but I'm not sure it's going to come out either.

Looks very stuck but did you try the screw driver trick. I do know motorcraft has a carb clean that is very effective in eating old fuel like that or dip it in some diesel fuel and that should also eat away at the old fuel. Many ways to try and get it free and clean. Just keep trying. Also it is a very common thing for the ends of cables to come apart like that after sitting for so many years.

I appreciate all the suggestions.

The plunger in the other carb will not come out - naval jell did not help.  So it's going to have to be done the hard way.  My concern at this point is to get them out, without damaging the threads at the top.

The right side plunger sort of mushroomed out and I'm going to have to take my drill press and a very thin bit and make a hole in the plunger (they appear to be soft brass) and perhaps place a screw in there and try to pull it out that way.

The left side will most likely do the same to I'll have to repeat the process.

Any other suggestions?

Thank
Tim

Well got home tonight and had a few minutes so I tackled the left choke.  With a bit of effort the plunger slide out.  As you can see the it  came out pretty clean, but it won't be reusable.

Will attempt to remove the other with one this weekend

Heat gun. In a pinch a hair dryer might work but might not get hot enough.

 A small butane torch?

that should work. Just don't get crazy with it. I find that the plungers get glued in with old gas. Heat helps to weaken that bond.

I finally got back to the Carb on the DT.  Picked up a butane torch and applied a little heat to the area.  That did loosen it up a bit but it still took a drill press and a machine screw to get it out.

Drilled a small hole, ran a screw into it and pulled it out with pliers.

As you can its pretty mashed.

Picked up a couple used replacements on ebay.
