Neutral Switch???
« on: February 24, 2011, 11:00:22 PM »
So I am reassembling my 66' 175 and wired her today. The only problem is when I tried to find what to wire the neutral light to I had no switch. Does anyone know where this switch is located on the bike and also where I may be able to find a switch that will do the job for me? I appreciate any help. You guys have saved my knuckles a lot of scrapes in my rebuild.

I believe the neutral switch is located under the cover on the left side of the engine.  It's on the end of the shift drum where it sticks through the side of the transmission.  You can see a picture of it on page 8 of the parts manual for the 175 on this website, Here:

Maybe someone with access to a 175 motor and a camara will post a picture for Young Gun?

Guys,  I am glad I caught this thread.  My sport 90 neutral switch has become intermittent.  I am pretty sure its at the switch.  What are the typical wear points, and what should I be looking for.  Is it operated from a cam step?  does the contact get crudded up sometimes and not allow it to make contact?   etc etc  None of the tech manual or clymers really detail anything about it.  Atleast on this thread you guys are showing where it is (assumed 90cc is very similar) and the 175 manual gives a real good image of it. thanks

I am new to these bikes, but they are a hoot.  I love our sport 90.  I am looking for bigger BS for myself.

First make sure it really is the switch that's bad and not a problem somewhere else in the wiring.  One way to do this is to clip a wire onto the terminal on the switch and the other end to ground.  If the light is on solid then it probably really is the switch.  If you still don't get a good solid neutral light, there is some other wiring issue.

Usual problems with the switch itself are minor wear and loss of spring tension.  Take the switch off, clean the contact areas carefully, making sure to remove any dirt etc. that could get between contact areas.  Again try shorting to ground directly from the inside of the switch contact to make sure it makes the light come on fully.  Finally, check the contact spring to make sure it is pushing solidly on the internal contact and on the shift drum end.  Somewhere in that sequence it should work again!

Switch body is sealed with a gasket to the crankcase.  High enough up so oil doesn't leak out too much, but needs to be sealed.
