5 Horse Power BS100

Hi,

I know that special 5hp versions of the BS100 were sold in some states of the US (presumably to comply with local licensing regualtions), but I have always been puzzled as to what modifications were made to the se engines to reduce their power output. Does anyone out there know the answer?

I've checked various parts books and dealer price lists, and there seems to be no indication of likely special parts for the BS100. I'm not planning to detune my 100TMX to 5hp, though - I'm just curious.

When I was 15 years old I lived with my parents in central Florida.  The State had a law then that a 15 year old with a learner's permit could legally operate a motorcycle during daylight hours as long as the bike did not exceed "5 brake hp".  I was riding a Yamaha 60 then and working part-time at a car wash and cutting lawns.  I saved up enough money to buy a brand new Bridgestone 100 GP.  The Bridgestone dealer was the closest motorcycle dealer around.  My Mom didn't like to drive much and my Dad was in the military serving in Vietnam.   I think it cost about $400.  It was fitted for the Florida 5 brake hp law and had a large decal stating so, but it still seemed more powerful than my Yamaha.  About a year after buying the bike I took it to a local fellow who operated a motorcycle repair shop out of his home for a tune up.  When I went back to pick it up he told me that because of the decal sticker he looked into what might be limiting the power of the bike and found that there was a "plug" at the carburetor that limited the amount of gas that would flow from the carb to the intake.  All he did was remove that plug and it was like having a whole new bike.  In hind sight it seemed like the bike had double the power.  I kept that bike for a few more years and sold it to a retired gentleman who was looking for a small bike to take with him on his motor home.  That was one of the few vehicles that I regret letting go.  Should I run across a blue 100 GP one day, it would be hard to pass it up.
