petcock alternatives
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:29:18 PM »
I read somewhere that a petcock for a Harley sportster will fit a bridgestone tank (22mm bung), but needs a Tee for feeding two carbs. I bought this one from Motorcycle Superstore for $13 and change (plus $2.95 shipping)

To avoid the extra Tee and create a more stock look, I decided to modify the thing to fit the 175 DT. These things are made so they can be right, left or straight outlet. I drilled (trough to the middle obviously) and tapped the sides to accept barbed fittings, cut off the lower spigot and tapped it so it can be plugged. It comes with a screen that fits up in the tank, but it's slightly larger than the ID of the tank bung, so i'll have to figure something out there (I am using inline filters, so no biggie really)

I used a 13/64 drill bit and a 6mm tap so I could use the original petcock barbed fittings, (but you could fit some other size). I know I am being cheap, but at this point, i'm just trying to get the thing to run for more than 5 minutes, not doing a full restoration.

Thanks! I know parts n more sells petcocks that can be one or two outlets (comes with a plug and an extra barbed fitting) but you have to buy an adapter ring to fit it. Their shipping is a little on the high side as well, so shipped, the whole thing is over 50 bucks I think. Might as well pick up the rebuild kit from Richard for 40. I'm a cheap-ass, so $16 is more my style.  ;D

She lives!!! I installed the petcock, added a gallon of gas, and installed new (hotter) B7HS plugs. idled for about 5 min. and even rode it around the neighborhood for a little (tires are pretty rotted-kept it easy). So that was my goal. Now to drain the gas, and start making the thing street worthy ;D
