NHRA national record for a 175 SR?
« on: January 16, 2011, 04:57:48 PM »
Early advertising for Bridgestone cycles mention that a 175 SR  had wins at Daytona and a national record in NHRA (drag racing). It is also mentioned in various articles in cycle magazines of that era. Cycle's test bike posted a 15.3 quarter, but was topped out long before the end because of gearing. Does anyone know what the record was and what class it was in? As a former owner of an SR, (ancient history, sadly!),I have always wondered what it was capable of! Thanks! Cary

BridgestoneBS, I think there was a 175, quarter mile.record. Rockford Motors sent out news letters and I believe  the record is mentioned in one of those. I think the record was set in one of the Southeastern states, possibly Tennessee, Virginia. Georgia. I think the bike/rider was from one of those three states also. Good Hunting, Paul

I have that newsletter, will try to find it and post it, but finding it is a tough one.

I do know a bit about the bike, sorry to say the frame was scraped in the 1970's. I ended up with the
engine, ( which was a much modified regular 175 not SR)  This engine was installed on a semi-custom
175 street bike, complete with the chambers from drag racing days, it was cool but 100% unrideable
Would bog at less than 10,000 rpms, them scream for a bit.  They must had used a 90lb rider to keep it
on the pipe, gears were just too far apart (ratio wise) to ride it.

I later sold the bike, now in hands of a collector.
