Title: source for points?
Post by: nikkievix on May 30, 2019, 12:23:54 AM
hey guys, well i pick up the bike officialy on the 10th,i took a drive up saturday to look at it and well....it's a keeper. i checked it over and it's in pretty good shape, just dirty, some minor rust and bad chrome in places on the exhaust. i'm looking to see what other bikes used the same points as my local shop gave me the "duh wha?" look when i said 1968 bridgestone 100cc. i did kick it over with a bolt in the plug cap and have spark, not the greatest, but it's there and engine has great compression. air filter...assuming one for a 100cc suzuki or yamaha or even a polaris razor should work, if thats the case then gonna get the k&n filter. so for now, just need a source for the points. thanks in advance.

to be honest, i'm looking for which years, makes and models used the same points so i can source parts localy as needed. i have a spare set from a 7 honda XL100 i used to own and if those will fit, then i know what to get. i been staring at pix of the 90/100 engines and at 90cc suzuki engines and can't help but notice how similar they are, just wondering id they are the same engine, just rebranded like the mitsubishi V6 thats in my chrysler that says chrysler on the cam covers but mitsubishi on the block and heads.

Nearly all the magnetos for the small Japanese bikes of the era were made by Nippon Denso. There is a good chance some parts may be the same among brands, although some had their own designs, just sourced from Nippon Denso.  I've not heard of anyone on here commenting about interchangeability of points with the exception of the late 175/200 & 350 being the same as some Kawasakis.  You can search and maybe find some other interchange, but it's probably easier to just contact Richard and buy ones that you know will fit.

If you have some spark, the points are probably useable, just clean them, maybe touch them up with 1000 grit emery paper.  You can do that without pulling the flywheel. These little bikes didn't have much spark on a good day, maybe jump a 3/16" gap at kicking speed.

And, no, the Suzuki engines are not the same.
