how can i set the timing on a 175 without the specials tool Timing bolt and Timing bar  thank you pallmall

A couple of comments posted on the Yahoo Bridgestone list recently:

David Bond:   The Chain Adjuster bolts are the same size/thread.....plus they're pointed.
I've used them to "Hold the Crank" in each dimple while I adjust each
corresponding set of points.

Bob Lombardi: I made one for my 350 from a bolt of the correct size to thread in the timing
hole.  I drilled it out down from the end and stuck a spring in it.  Then
the correct size ball bearing on top of that, then peened the edges of the
hole to keep the ball from coming completely out.

I screw it in the engine timing hole far enough to hit the mark on the
flywheel.  You can feel the ball going in the flywheel hole.
All I can say is that it works.

I'm not sure how it works for the 175's and 200's may be the same.

I'm only aware of the bolt, which as a factory tool is a bolt drilled down the middle with a small pointed pin (which is what I think they are calling a "bar") that you hold into the notch in the crank to position it.  The suggestions above are a substitute for that.  The factory tool may be available from Richard or CPC, but is not really needed if you use the pointed chain adjuster bolt or you can even grind a point on a standard bolt that fits the hole in the crankcase, it's just a little more difficult to find the notches in the crank.  You can also use a dial indicator in the spark plug hole.  The service manual specs tell you the distance BTC.

how long should the bolt be or how far does the chain adjustment go down in there. or should i just get it at tdc and adjust the timing that way. thanks for all the help
