New GTR Owner

Hello

I picked up this 1968 GTR earlier this week.
Only none original parts that I can detect are the helmet lock on the handle bar riser that was added and the 1970's metal flake paint job.
Bike came with original owners manual, parts book, and dealer\distributors worksheets and price lists.
Also have a set of hard luggage in white but do not see BS logo on them.

I plan to leave the bike as is as its a bit of a time capsule. Will not be touching the bike until spring as I have other bikes on the bench at this time.

Bike was owned by an elderly gentlemen and he started it on occasion but that not ridden it since the early 1980's.
What should I look for before attempting to start this bike?
I am an experienced motorcyclist and mechanic and own a variety of bikes. But in all my years I have never wrenched on a rotary valve motor as this is a rare bird.
So what in particular should I look for on this model?
Any special tools I will need? (never seen a bike that didn't ;>)

Congrats on your acquisition Jeff. I saw this bike on Craigslist in NY I think, but being from AZ, it would have been tooooo long a hike.
Main things are to be sure the carbs are clean, I would remove the heads and check/lube the cylinders before trying to start, timing /spark check, these bikes are oil injected, so starting with premix until you are sure the oil pump is working properly is a good idea (all thes adjustments, etc are described in the service manual), not really outside any previous 2 stroke experience you may have. The rotary valve setup doesn't really add any secret sauce other than making the induction timing more predictablle/better controlled. Your bike appears to be in good shape. You'll find plenty of willing helpers here, so keep us informed as you get into it.

Congratulations on your find. I think you'll find this website helpful. The manuals/articles tab might be of interest to you. I'm curious does the dealer/ distributor paperwork show any businesses that still exist?
