opinions?
« on: May 05, 2019, 07:29:33 PM »
so here is the bike, this is the pic from the craigslist ad. the guy says its complete, has the key, good compression, kicks over and everything is there and never ever registered in california and apparently was bought through sears in 67 by the original owner that ran a sears store. current owner is apparently the 2nd owner and i'll be the 3rd. will have a bill of sale in hand and just get it inspected. only mods i plan on doing are semi metalic brake shoes and turn signals, cuz in cali...give hand signals and idiots miiight think yer throwing gang signs. also may upgrade the rear shocks to support an over 250 pound woman. forgot to mention that it looks like a 67 tmx 100.

Nikki;
  Hi there. It appears what you have is a '68-9 100 Trail. They started with the TMX line a year or so later, and I don't recall seeing a blue one. The TMX's had painted tanks, not chrome. Your LH sidecover should have a metal badge on it that says Trail 100. Sears didn't sell these, it's an old wives tale from the early years, but they certainly never sold the small displacement tube framed bikes, which started in 1968. I own the same bike you have, but with the serial number 55, and it was produced in March of 1968 according to what records exist. You've got yourself a nice starting point from the looks of the picture. These were really great little bikes! You're in the right place for help to get it rolling. Thanks for sharing. Grab your serial number off of your VIN plate, back by the right rear shock, and post it. We'll figure out when yours was built.

I'm pretty sure that's a TMX 100, but maybe I'm mistaken?  If it is a TMX, there should be a "TMX" badge riveted to the left side cover.  The 100 TMX definitely came in blue, exactly as pictured, that's the color I had back in the day.

The tank was chromed, with blue candy apple paint on the top part as in the picture. Later production TMX's had completely painted tanks, all the later ones I've seen are gold with black stripes. Great little bike, Wish I had not sold the one I had, back in about 1972.

....... Thanks for the info on the earlier TMX's. Didn't recall that. Mines older, so I guess I'm fixated... LOL

thanks guys. i'll ask the guy selling for more pix. so far looks like the paint is in good shape, just needs some rubbing compound and hit with the pressure washer. i know one thing i'll get is a new sticker set. tho question. what is the head gasket made of? is it the standard stamped sheet tin or is it the mesh type with the sintered metal resin paste goop stuff?

Aluminum gasket. Be careful with your paint. As memory serves, it's Kandy, so if it's decent, try to keep it that way. You can't really spot it in. Sounds like you're on your way!
