BS 2900 Neutral Change Plate
« on: August 10, 2020, 08:54:06 PM »
This is the first time I have had to play around with the neutral switch on a 200.

The neutral bulb filament in the speedometer looks good.

The neutral change case (1767-8000) is broken so I am going to replace it. Is there
a specific way to install the neutral change plate (1768-8000) in the case?
Or does it just slip in the case and on to the 4/5th gear selection shifter shaft?

If that doesn't make the neutral light work I will take the neutral switch (1762-8001) apart and
clean it.

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards

Randy

IIRC, put the change plate on the shaft first, the end that has the inward bend locks it into place radially on the shaft (it has a little springiness to hold it), then slip the case over it.  It's been awhile...

Well the plastic collar that fits on the 4/5th gear shifter shaft is broken.
That is where the contact plate fits in. Since the shifter shaft comes with
the plastic collar the only way I see to fix it is to put in a new shifter shaft.

I am not going to split the motor to put a new 4/5th shifter shaft in. Everything
else works and the bike runs great except for the neutral light. I guess that is how
I am going to leave it.

How many people have a BS 175 or 200 that the neutral light doesn't work?

I haven't looked at that wiring specifically for a looooongg time, so this is a guess, but can you just jumper across the 4/5 neutral change switch? The basic neutral light switch is in the neutral switch on the end of the shift drum. The signal just goes through the change switch to accommodate the 4/5 gear pattern differences. I'm sure you only ride in the 5 speed position, so just find the correct wire and bypass the change switch. It is nice to have a working neutral light.

Karl,

I have come up with a easier way to replace the collar on the
shifter shaft.

I will post a couple photos.

I took a grommet and made a groove where the contact
spring(?) will set in. Like the original collar.

But while I was putting it on the exiting shifter shaft I
didn't pay attention that I had it in 4th gear. Out came the
shaft. I will be tearing it down and putting in a new 4/5th
shifter shaft.

I checked the the wiring and light by grounding the led wire
that goes the the switch cover and the neutral light came on.

Well, that solved your problem, unfortunately, the hard way.   ::)
