Sportshift Lever Question. Help!
« on: May 05, 2012, 03:17:27 PM »
I'm not sure why but my sporshift lever seems to work as it should changing the gear box from a 4 to 5 speed.  The problem is the lever itself can easily be moved from one mode to the other.  I have hit this lever with my foot or leg and inadvertently and found out the hard what that I had went from a 5 to a 4 speed.  Is there a way to "lock" this lever in a position so it doesn't move so easily?
Any help/siggestions would be greatly appreciated before I blow my transmission up!  Thanks.

Steve, there's spring tension against the shaft in two points. Inside at the pin (fork guide) that holds the drum from rotating. The other point is a wave washer behind the lever itself. Is that wave washer in place? You could replace it if damaged or missing. You can shim it tighter with a second wave washer or shim washer to make the handle harder to rotate. Only way I see to keep it from being  "kicked" out of your selected mode would be to safety wire it. It seems to be a common occurrence.  Mark.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the suggestions.  Yes, the wave washer is present, but perhaps it is not providing enough tension.  I will see if I can shim or add another.  I will let you know how I make out.  Thanks again.

I ty-rap mine to the frame tube so it won't move.
