Title: TMX and GP differences
Post by: Pinche on August 23, 2009, 02:40:49 PM
I've yet to see a GP up for sale but see the Sports and TMX's up quite abit. When I read descriptions about the different models they group the three together. Are they kinda like the Honda CB and CL's, where one's street bike and the other is a scrambler. Still essentially the same bike but just small things that are easily change able. Would it be easier to find a Sport or TMX and make a GP from it or are they  completely different bikes? What makes the GP different from the other two models also?

The Sport has a stamped steel frame where the others have a tube frame. So it rules converting the Sport  out.

I finally spoke with someone who had both a GP and TMX in his huge arsenal of bikes to say the least. Now I also have a finger on a TMX that's pretty complete for just a $100 and a 6 hour round trip. Now it's just tracking down the parts to make it into a GP as I don't see much GP stuff on ebay or on here or anywhere in general. So between the TMX and GP, what are the major differences?

There are very few differences.  The GP has a low pipe, different chain guard, kickstart arm, drive sprocket # of teeth, and side cover emblem.  It also didn't come with the luggage rack.

I emailed you the 100G/P-TMX parts list.  I couldn't find it in the manuals section of this site.

The TMX is the rarer bike, you may want to keep it as a TMX. The TMX is very similar to the 100 Trail shown in the 90-100 parts list.  The G/P is the street/low pipe version of the tube frame bike.

The TMX's are more rare then the GP's? I've never even seen a GP on ebay besides just a few parts like a side cover and well....that's it. The TMX I can pick up for 100 which is alot more complete then my DT175 but then again my 175 came with a title where as the TMX doesn't. The paint is actually pretty good along with pretty much everything else. It's just missing a seat, side cover, and case cover(carb side). I just want to see a decent picture of a GP.

Some differences that I remember about the GP and the TMX are that the GP has street tires, street front fender(close to the wheel),the handlebar is not as wide as the TMX's and it there isn't a crossbar, one rear wheel sprocket,no rear luggage rack,no front fender brace.Top speed claimed for the GP is 72 mph.The TMX has street legal knobby tires,a higher front fender,a wider handlebar with a crossbar, two rear wheel sprockets, luggage rack, a front fender brace and the tool kit included a short section of chain-about seven links and a masterlink for use if you wanted to go from the smaller rear wheel sprocket to the larger one.The top speed for the TMX is around 60-65 mph.I am pretty sure there are more differences.

In my previous reply I didn't mention the TMX pipe being up and out of the way,and it has a skid plate where the GP doesn't.
