Caution about powercoating!
« on: March 06, 2011, 07:16:52 PM »
Please pardon, this is partly a caution to others and partly just venting of my frustration!
I recently tried painting my frame myself, and was almost but not quite happy with the results.  Hindsight being what it is I should have left it alone, it was just about perfect as an accurate reproduction of typical factory paint.
But I wanted the benefits of powercoat!  Hard, durable, resistant to all manner of chemical and physical damage.

Took the frame in to our local powercoat place.  A week later, I picked up the frame.  Wow.  An excellent shiny hard durable job, but one problem.....ORANGE PEEL.... like you would not believe.  It's like waves in the ocean in places!!

Turns out this is a risk with powercoat, and depends on the skill with which it's applied.

So now I'm debating what to do next.  Trying to strip off powercoat sounds like a long difficult process.  Continuing assembly with the frame the way it is would be an embarrassment, it's really bad.  I certainly don't trust the place that did it to do any more work on the frame, for risk of damage to the underlying metal.  I did try a small area, and a vigorous attack with the strongest paint stripper available will remove the stuff, but it will have to wait for warmer weather, It's way too strong to work inside!

Quite a setback from being almost ready to start reassembly!

Bob
Take your frame back to the people who did your powder coating and get them to do it again if they are reputable company.
They will do it again, things happen.powder coating is the best way to coat your frame.
Good luck.
Reed.

A mate of mine always has his frame powder coated then,  flats the powder coating,   then spray paints over it and gets great results.
