This is interesting because I always thought the GTR was red and the GTO was gold. At least most of the factory/dealer brochures & advertising I've seen seem to picture them in those combinations. I've also seen blue ones and heard of green ones but thought someone just did a color change.

This GTR is currently on eBay and he mentions that the gold tank is original to the bike. When I first saw that, I believed he was mistaken since the rest of the bike is red ...... but now I'm not so sure.  ???

I never saw a Gold GTR either, just gold GTO's The bike on ebay looks like a bitsa bike, that is a bike made out of bits of many bikes. Luke

Hummmm.....just got to thinking, are you referring to the later "second generation" GTR's made by Rockford Motors?

All 4 of the GTRs I have are red. Two are original paint, one has been repainted but it looks like they made an attempt to match the original red, and the nasty parts bike was also repainted at some point in time but it was red originally.... you can see it where the repaint has been scratched off. I guess you can have any color you want as long as its red.

Isn't there any sales literature listing available colors? In my very limited experience all I've ever seen are red GTRs and gold GTOs, like Moonpup said.

There isn't a whole lot of paint on a GTR what with the stainless front fender, chrome rear and mostly chrome tank. It might be why they chose a dramatic color like red. I almost have to wonder if they were trying to copy Ferrari red since they used almost the same dancing horse in their logo.

If someone had photoshop we could try out different colors  :o .... black might be cool....

Ooooops, I guess Ferrari has the prancing horse and Bridgestone a dancing lion, but they are kinda similar

I found this one that either is or was for sale in Australia that had the following discription with the ad....."One owner a bridgestone dealer all original never restored or altered."

So, I guess blue GTR's were available?       Yes/No....anybody?

BTW; It's listed as a 1968 model

Just to add my thoughts - I saw that bike and immediatetl gthought it was an early red GTR with an early gold GTO tank on it. The 1970 model GTO had a gold and chrome tank, identical to the early GTR apart from colour.

Ok, so here's a little something more to add to the confusion. Since I don't currently own any of the original brochures, I have to go by what I can find on the net.

I found a pdf of this brochure and on the back it listed the color options for the various bikes it featured,  which included both the GTO and GTR.

It listed as follows.....

      (GTO)                          (GTR)
  Imperial Gold                 Candy Red
  Sequoia Green

Here's what I've determined at this point.....

From "official" brochures/advertising/etc, The GTO could be had in either Gold or Green and the GTR, in Red only.

Unofficially, from various owner pictures and descriptions, Blue was an option for both the GTO & GTR.

(PS) I would love to see some pics of the Sequoia Green GTO if any one has some!  :o

Here is one I found on Craigslist. The tank has been painted black with no chrome and the side panels are silver. Not bad looking at all!

Yes I am and in fact I currently have an ad in the "Wanted" section of the classifieds here. I've had a couple of responses so far, including one from Mr. Anderson, but I'm holding out in hopes of finding an original gold & chrome GTO. I'm kind of a purist, so I'm not looking to clone one at the moment. The other bike offered is a beautiful example and probably worth every penny, but as of now, it's out of reach for me.

So bottom line........my search continues.  :D

Good luck with your GTR and I agree, red is probably the best choice for your resto.
