generator timing part 2
« on: July 17, 2022, 11:42:51 AM »
i have been following the advice given about generator/clutch/crank timing lining the dots up etc but on my bike i find that if i line all the dots up the points for the left side are just starting to open if i move the generator around by approx 45 degrees the right points start to open, i havnt tried to run it like this and dont want to rebuild it all if its not going to work so does anyone know whats wrong? thanks Marcus

It's my understanding that you only line up those four dots on initial setup during reassembly.  They don't all realign again after each revolution.  I converted to electronic ignition but I did set it up initially with the four dots.  You might want to read the posting about the electronic ignition setup as I think it will explain a lot for you.

Are your points set to 12-16 thou with the cam at its highest lift. If one of the points was way out of adjustment it could be feasible for it to open before it should.
Are the points heels at 180 degs to each other ?  I have a suspicion that one of the 175 points arrangements did not have the points at 180 degs (can't find my page which shows this) Wonder if you have the wrong points backplate.
GTR points cam should have one lobe (highpoint). If yours has 2, its from a 175.

Mr. Jones, this may be the lengthy post referred to above.

BRT-GTR is correct about the 175 points. Attached service letter shows the 3 configurations, the 350 looked like the 3rd configuration.

like you say the 350 points layout is the third one ,i have the one fitted and two spare so im pretty sure they are all 350s . The points cam only has one highpoint. Im going to try it as pictured as the actual position of the generator gear dosnt matter as long as the points open just before TDC

Make sure the points springs, condenser wires and wire from coils are fully insulated from the lugs on the points plate. Can only see one insulating washer on the left points but it might just be the angle of the photo.

It seems to me, looking at the wiring job in the dynamo pic above, that the condenders have been completely bypassed and are doing nothing. Here's a nos 350 dynamo set-up.....

Moonpup,    I noticed that, looks like a previous owner has rewired the points to connect both the coil wires and the condensers at the bolt on the points. Did a similar rewire on my GTO. (avoids soldering the condensers and makes future condenser swaps much easier).
Also note the coil wires are not standard, should be white/black but appear to be green/green which is ok as long as they are connected to the correct points.     Brian.

Ok Brian, I'll take your word that that tangled mess of wiring works..... but it still looks jiggy to me!  🤣

ha ha! yes a bit "jiggy" but all correct just the wires are a fraction too long .there are two insulating washers on each set of points but like you say the camera angle hides one of them. i have four bikes and dont use any of them enough so when ive got it running this will be for sale (uk only) £6000 bargain!
