Setting Mileage On New Speedometer/Odometer
« on: January 26, 2013, 03:01:51 PM »
I purchased a brand new speedometer/odometer and would like it to have to correct mileage that is actually on my GTR.  I got this far but I am unsure how to proceed.  Anyone know the best way to remove the tumbler assembly so I can set the mileage to the correct mileage on my GTR?  Thanks

Can't help you at the moment but if you tell me how you got that out without destroying the case, I'll go tinker with the old one off my parts bike and see if I can come up with an answer.  ;D

Hi Moonpup,
It was so easy, I was surprised!  Just picked a starting point on the crimp on the backside with a very small pointed screwdriver.  I gently eased the crimp up going around several times.  Once I went around once with the very small screwdriver I moved up to a slightly larger screwdriver tip and repeated the process.  Once I had the crimp pointed upwards I just gently pulled the bezel off.
Thanks.

I did exactly the same on my Kawasaki triple then thought it would be a good idea to clean the numbers on the barell with acetone, it wasn't such a good idea as it took the numbers off. :o

That looks great Steve.

Now that you've motivated me to tear into these things, I was considering powder coating the cases so that they would be less susceptible to scratching.

Guys, hate to bring up some bad news but tampering with an odometer's recorded  miles is illegal in all states and most places in the world.  Yes; even when you do it honestly.
Perhaps others may want to consider this fact.

Hi Richard,
Why would setting an odometer forward, from zero miles be a problem?  I can see rolling an odometer reading backwards would be a problem.  Please explain.  The mileage on my new speedometer/odometer matches the recorded mileage on the bike, motor, and Title.
Thanks.

What they are doing is legal according to federal law. What is not legal in all states is tampering with an odometer with intent to defraud.

Jeff, I live in a different county ;D. But I don't make Federal Law here. I just think members should be aware of what to do legally if they replace their speedometer and how to handle reporting mileage on a title or for the purpose of selling. The link is from a government web site.

BTW, Don't remove those tags from your matresses either, just kiddin :D

I also bought a NOS speedometer for my GTR. It has for whatever reason a few 10ths registered on the odometer, i will for that small amount registered, turn the odometer back so it set at 00000.0 by turning the front wheel opposite way until it hits that register. When i am done with my resto it will be accurate since the resto. starting with the 00000.0  I am sure it varies, but in Minnesota odometer readings on a  vehicle older than 10 years is not required as the title states: ODOMETER " N/REQD" I will always be able to total the amount of mileage for the bike since i have the old speedo and have that mileage since it was parked, all i need to do is add the old mileage to my mileage recorded on the speedo after the resto  :)

Thanks for posting that goverment link Bikenstein.  That pretty much covers it.  As I thought, NOT illegal.
