GTR piston and crank pictures
« on: September 20, 2012, 10:11:32 PM »
I will post up some pictures of what I see after getting the pistons off the rods tonight.
Here's a picture of the dirt ingested by running that fateful night with no carb covers, and the left intake coming to rest over the shoulder gravel and dirt while I was unconscious.

This picture shows a gouge in the left side of the crankshaft. It does not look like fresh damage to me. But it does make me wonder how it was caused.

Here is a photo showing 2 gouges in the crankshaft on the right half of the engine. These look more recent than the left side, but probably not from my accident.

I'm skeptical I will have time tomorrow, but if not I hope to have the cylinders and pistons at Millenium by Monday to see what they say about their condition for cleaning and replating the cylinders.

This is ingesting some dirt. I broke the crank first then in my hast to catch up, I went off track into a nice soft pile of dirt.

Geez, that is packed in pretty good.
Maybe during the rebuild I should install a level sensor so if the bike is leaning over too far it kills the ignition?

A lot of modern bikes have tip-over sensors.  Seems like something bikes should have always had.

As to the gouge in the left crankshaft wheel - I've seen that before (maybe even done it myself).  Someone drove a chisel in between the crank wheels to either straighten the crank after assembly or try to take it apart.  Since there doesn't appear to be a matching gouge in the adjacent crank wheel, this is probably a crank made up of parts from more than one crankshaft. The gouges in the right side are probably related to the same ham-fisted repair.

Thanks Karl. I had hoped my engine block was still a virgin, but I don't think so.
I didn't take pictures, but the crank weights both have a line very lightly marked in them along the line of the shaft axis.
Probably someone's crude way of marking the position for re-assembly.
I'll see about taking that photo and posting it over the weekend.
I also didn't look too closely, but I'm not sure both the pistons have the same markings on the inside.

Yes, those faint lines will be re-assembly alignment marks. The centre bearings on my GTR blew about 18 months after I bought it. The crank rebuilder scribed two lines across all four crankwheels before pressing it apart. This allowed him to re-align it perfectly. I checked the ignition timing with dial guage and meter after I'd reassembled the motor, and it was spot-on without moving the generator from its orignal position.

I did not pull the rings off the pistons, but I'll do that tonight and hopefully visit Millenium Tuesday after work.
And also take a picture of the scribed lines - the timing on mine was always good so someone did it right before I bought it.
