Title: Rims
Post by: Jmw on October 13, 2015, 06:55:56 PM
What options are their for replacement rims, will any 18'' replacement of the appropriate width work? What size/brand are the racing guys running? I've been slowly bringing parts home from a shed in upstate NY and just brought home the wheels, rims are not useable and drums are siezed. There are numerous options as far as rims, I am unsure if off-road excel rims would be feasable for on-road or race applications

Hi, JMW,

The angle of the spoke holes varies depending on whether the rim was drilled to for a drum or a disc brake (smaller hub). If you lace a big drum  brake into a rim drilled for a disc hub, the spokes will take up a bend at the hub end instead of leaving the rim at 90 degrees. It's OK for occasional road use, but the bend introduces extra stress and you could end up popping the heads off the spokes over time. If you use a rim drilled for a drum brake you should be fine.

I bought an aftermarket set for my 50 Sport on eBay about a year ago. They matched up and as I recall they were advertised as Bridgestone replacements. My NOS spokes worked perfectly with them.

The seller was classicscooterparts. No idea if he has 175 wheels.

What is the Rim size(s) of a 175HS?  How many spoke holes and what is the width?

I just bought two sets of rims from the same seller.   One set for my BS50 Sport.  That seller seems to specialize in the smaller bike parts and I'm not sure of the width of the 175 rims.  I have a set of new rims from one of those Thailand sellers that is supposed to fit the smaller bikes but they are 1.40 wide and not the 1.20 wide needed for 50/60 cc bikes.

I think the 175HS takes a WM1 sized rim which is also a 1.6
so I am guessing that a 1.6 x 18 36hole is what to look for.

While I'm pretty sure the rim will use 36 spokes, I don't have anything 175/200 to measure and confirm.  Maybe somebody out there with a 175 can confirm?

I can confirm 175 DT rims are 1.6 x 17 36 hole.
