175 running without 5th gear sports shift .

Hi. Going through the engine parts I have for my 175 D T  as I bought the bike with dismantled engine, a lot of work done but I don't see most of the internals for the lever to engage the 5th gear. The outer lever is there as is the part that screws in the main case with part of the shaft on. I am guessing maybe it was running with those parts removed. Is that possible?
