Plating
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:03:54 PM »
I was thinking about replating the handle bar and muffler on my BS-7s.  Would nickel plating be a suitable/cheaper alternative to chrome?  What type of protective plating would you recommend for various nuts and bolts?

Zinc is the preferred choice for plating of nuts and bolts, it is silver like a can, but not real bright polish like real chrome.

Sorry to say but handlebars and mufflers need to be chrome, but  zinc is better than rust!

Hi Irishrower,
Nickel will not do for plating. It will rust shortly after you have it done. It is part of the process of chrome plating. The chrome is applied to seal the nickel and add to the shine. Send your parts that were originally chromed out and have them stripped, polished and rechromed. I use Shelbyville plating and am always satisfied. Good luck with your project.
