Title: Air cleaner / filter for a DT 175cc availability
Post by: edward on August 27, 2015, 04:17:25 PM
Does anyone know if the air cleaner / filter for the DT 175 is still available? If so how much? If it isn't is there a suitable replacement?

.this is what I have been told . take your old filter to a air conditioning shop they may be able to make the same size paper with the old end bits . you maybe able to buy a sheet of the concertina and cut and glue yourself reusing the old bits .or maybe make one out of wire and filter foam to fit .
or what about this idea if you can get pods the same size as the holes on the ends of air box you could cut two slots in the rubber of the pods slide it through the hole facing in ,drill a hole in the top of pods using the original bolt with a spring between them pushing them out .if that makes sense

I measured the internal can and ordered an air filter from K&N that fit perfectly.  I think it happens to be a filter that fits an Austin Healy too.

Thought I would resurect this thread as I'm looking for an air filter too, so far without much success. I have looked at the K&N catalogue and can find nothing that would fit.

What have you guys used?

@jjwithers. Do you happen to know the K&N part number(s) and do you have one air filter being fed from both ends or two being fed from an end each?

I just used UNI universal foam sheet (5/8" thick) cut to size and rolled it.

The K&N is open on both sides.  You can go through their site and search by type, size, measurements, etc... I'll look in the garage and see if I still have the box with the part number on it.

I have searched the K&N site with my measurements I have: 176mm (7") long, 50mm (2") I/D and 82mm (3.25") O/D but can't find anything close enough, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Sye

Hopefully the photos of the filter will attach.  It fits amazingly inside the air tube.  I think I had to go a bit wider on the Inside dimension.  You can see a part number on the side of the rubber filter.  Maybe that will help.

A035A4 is a mold number which leads to 3 part numbers on the K&N site. CG-0100, E-2040 and KA-7583. The product spec's with the actual sizes (in mm) are listed for each of those 3 filters.

CG-0100 is 116mm long with 64mm ID 89mm OD
E-2040 is 168mm long with 62mm ID and 89mm OD
KA-7583 is 122mm long, 62mm ID and 89mm OD

I don't have an old air filter in front of me or the air filter can, but based on the measurements Sye posted, I would say the E-2040 is the way to go. I will measure my air filter can and old NOS air filter tonight. Hopefully this is the solution many of us have been looking for.

Thanks you so much. I've ordered an e2040 which should be here in a couple of days and will keep you posted. The spec suggests it may be too short but it may sit on the inner part of the flange. Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for your trouble JJ. :-)

I measured the NOS filter I have as well as the filter can. Looks like the length is the only potential issue as the NOS filter is 175mm long (give or take a mm) and the end caps squeeze against it to hold it in place in the center of the can.

Hopefully the 168mm spec is the filter surface area and the rubber ends give the extra distance needed to fit securely.

Fingers crossed for a positive response from Sye.

Well, thanks to jjwithers we have found Cinderella, it fits! It arrived this morning and doesn't just fit, it's perfect. The E-2040 is the business.

I know there are two different air filter cannister types so can't be sure it will fit both but can say with cetrainty that it fits the later type without the rod through the centre like the attached picture.

Mine assembly the rod through the center and it fits perfecto as well. Hence why I recommended it.

Now... in exchange... if only somebody could come to my house and help me get my 175HS timed (with electronic Ign) and running for the first time since an engine rebuild... anybody?  ;)

Everything is wired as of today.  I need to install the chain...mount the exhaust... I'm close... I can't wait to run this thing...

Here's a couple of solutions I used. I'm not certain if they apply to you as I'm not certain of your setup.
On my 175 racer, I made a plate and bolted it temporarily to a stud I tapped into one of the holes behind the condenser mounting. You could mount a similar plate to one of the alternator cover screws to set the timing.

The easier solution is the one I used on my 350.  I made a pointer out of thin stock, temporarily mounted it to the rotor holding screw (longer screw than normal) and marked the housing with the firing point.

Then, in either case, you can rotate the engine slowly and watch where it fires and/or use a regular strobe type timing light to verify the correct timing while running.

Well, thank you all for the responces!  I finally settled on a sufficient replacement part. This is a Briggs and Straton air filter that I found on the clearance isle at WalMart. I cut out one end and added the PVC adapter at the other end to take up the extra space. I ended up cutting off about an inch of the PVC to make it fit.

The Filter I got is from a 70's Alfa Romeo 2000.  It fits perfectly.

This one,  K&N E-2040, or did you find a paper replacement?

Yes, the K&N E-2040 - that looks like the one I got.  I'm pretty sure it is the same model.  I can't find a receipt anywhere though.
