Tmx100 horrible clunking rattle in gear
« on: October 03, 2011, 04:10:37 PM »
Hi I'm new here with my 1969 tmx100. I just got it running good but as soon as I put her in gear there is a horrible clunking and rattle.  The previous owner replaced the plastic shifter drum locator... Are the trannys easy to disassemble without special bridgestone tools? I work at a bike shop so I have all the resources. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regards, Mikey

i am not sure about the tmx but the 175 and 350 you don't need the special tools if you have everything at hand i think you will be fine

Thanks dude, it's weird the noise only happens IN gear, in neutral it sounds great. Clutch? Trans? Shifter drum?

If you work for a motorcycle shop you will have all the tools to repair it and there are plenty of people on the site
To help you out.
Thanks.
Steve.

Ya we mostly work on harleys and American v-twins but I still have my antique metrics! Do I have to split the cases to get to the trans? Or is there a trap door or something behind the clutch?

Got it fixed with a few hours of work, it turned out to be the flywheel/rotor was loose! Tightened it down and it still came loose, then again with loctite. Turned out the woodruff key was smashed and flared out the groove. A little filing later it fit fine guess it wasn't letting the rotor fit on the tapered shaft true. Just got it driveable and I love it to death! I kind of have to get a running start to get goin in first, and I know it doesn't have a lot of torque and I'm on my street sprocket.

 Is this typical?

I'd try the trail sprocket. Mine had plenty of torque when I was a lanky lad of 135lb. Now packing about 100lb additional (how is that possible?) the TMX still pulls away nicely with the trail sprocket. No running starts necessary. You lose about 5-10mph top end but as a trail bike that shouldn't be an issue.

I'm actually planning on riding it to work and back. Top speed limit is 55 on the way here so I wanna be able to at least go that fast!
