Lurching problem
« on: June 29, 2011, 08:41:03 PM »
TMX is running again after long storage. When I engage the clutch at start-up it jumps into 1st like I don't have the clutch engaged at all. Afterward, all other gear changes work as they should. Is this a clutch spring issue or something more serious?

It's not always easy to explain, or interpret, in words what a piece of machinery is doing without seeing it first hand, but I'll try.
Is this a case where when you pull in the clutch lever, then shift the transmission from neutral into first gear, the bike lurches forward as if you hadn't pulled in the clutch lever?

If so, it's likely just a case of stuck clutch plates from sitting.    If not, try explaining again what it's doing.

+1 on the sticking clutch plates. I'll bet that if you pulled them and cleaned them up things would be OK. Sometimes just riding the bike will clear that up!
I have a tilt wheel for more headroom!

Yes, BS Mechanic, you correctly interpreted my description. And thanks a million, I will look into the clutch plates.

Just ride it a little, they will normally get back to normal. That's common on a bike that has been sitting for some time. Once underway, you can pull the clutch lever and give it throttle to make them break loose; once they do, just release the lever, then pull it in/release it again a few times to work the plates back and forth and get oil through them.  Make certain you have the proper transmission oil level.  Some bike clutches/oil combination will do that after sitting just a month or so.  It is possible you will have to take the cover off and physically pry the plates apart with a screwdriver, but unlikely.

I've got a Kaw KDX175 that's been sitting about 10 years, that now has a stuck clutch.  I'm hoping when I get it running it will break loose.

On my Bridgestone TMX 100 it had not been used for a long time, so i put it on the centre stand start the engine warm it up.
And i put it into gear, pull the clutch in and dab the rear brake at the same time do that three or four times then turn the
Engine off and adjust the clutch on the arm and on the clutch rod and away you go!
Thanks
Steve.
