I would not use shift forks that are as worn as what you described, for sure. The service manual has a width spec. for the pad, I would stay within that. Are not shift forks available from time to time on Ebay? I have a supply, was just cleaning up six of them tonight.
Just for grins, I black oxided a set of good ones. I'm big into black oxiding because it offers some corrosion resistance and surface lubricity without effecting the surface metal or part dimensions, and it is a cheap process. I'm using it on the forks for the lubricity factor.
