Title: GTO oil tank
Post by: lockhart on November 23, 2017, 11:39:11 AM
Have two oil tanks off two restored Go's which are cracked in the same position. Have tried various glues but nothing will stick once oil is replaced in the tanks. Any suggestions on how I can make a repair.

Hi lockhart.... a while back I asked the same question about a cracked tank I had and several proposals were put forth. I ended up selling the tank "as is" and never tried any repairs.

I've posted the link to that thread below.... you might see something there that you'd want to try out.

As a relatively new GTO owner, I'd be interested to know where the tanks have cracked.  Photo?

After a lifetime of repairing things, kid's toys etc, the only reliable method of joining these soft plastics is heat welding which is not easy.   You could try a local car repair shop, see if they have a specialist plastic welder. It's amazing what some of these guys can repair these days.

Thanks for the info guys. Tried the glue mentioned but no joy. Both tanks are cracked at the bottom of the rear mounting point. Photo show both tanks with cracks at the same point. Is this a know area  for damage

Since the cracks are in an area that would be hard to be seen, have you given any thoughts about patching with fiberglass? This would also add strength to the area.

Thanks for the photos of the cracks, that's very informative.  I think the plastic oil tank on the GTO was a genuine first for Bridgestone, they were finding the way, should have been rubber mounted but that's easy to say now !

I believe the tanks were made from a high density polyethylene type plastic which is notoriously difficult, if not impossible to glue due to it's waxy nature.   Could you consider a stickon rubber patch which would be held in place by the frame tube. Just a thought, might work.

Great job on the GTOs, they look really nice. The white tank with black stripe is growing on me  8).

The plastic tank shown in this video is very similar in character to the GTO oil tank, although somewhat bigger. Shows what can be achieved with the right kit and experience. Our tanks are too scarce to throw away, I believe heat welding is the way forward.

I would be interested in buying an oil tank if anyone has a cracked one they'd like to sell.  I have a neighbor with a plastic welder and may be able to get it to hold oil.  My GTO didn't come with a tank.  Thanks in advance.
